Gone Fishing! Why Fishing is a Great Hobby
Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned angler, recreational fishing is a great hobby and a favorite American pastime for good reason. For starters, recreational fishing is a relatively simple, low-impact activity that can be done alone or with family and friends in tow. Fishing can also be a stress reliever and a great way to get the family to spend more time outdoors.
If you’re looking for something fun to do this summer, why not take up fishing as your new hobby? Cambridge Crossing in Celina is home to seven fully-stocked catch-and-release fishing ponds. As a homeowner, you have access to the pond to practice your casting skills and reel in your next great catch.
Getting Started
If you’re new to fishing, there are numerous online resources that can help you get started. Take Me Fishing is a website offering a variety of educational videos from how to pick a fishing pole to how to tie fishing knots. You can also search on YouTube to find dozens of channels with beginner tips!
The Celina Bass Club is another resource if you’re interested in stepping up your fishing game. The organization meets to discuss Bass fishing as a sport and also organizes tournaments and kid fishing outings.
Equipment & Gear
To get started, you’ll need a durable fishing rod and reel, fishing line, hooks, bait or lures, bobbers, sinkers, swivels, line cutters, dehooker or pliers, and a tackle box. Other items you might not have thought of: sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays on the water, a First Aid kit and sunscreen!
Your local sporting goods or department store is a great place to find affordable beginner fishing gear, as well as any bait/tackle stores.
Obtaining a License
If you’re only interested in catch-and-release fishing within Cambridge Crossing, you don’t need to worry about obtaining a fishing license or permit! Simply abide by the community’s rules, make sure to gently remove your hook and release your catch back where it came from as quickly as possible.
However, if you’re itching to try fishing as a sport at a state lake or reservoir, you can learn more about fishing licenses, endorsements, tags and permits on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website.
Lake Fishing
Cambridge Crossing residents can also access two nearby lakes for larger fishing opportunities this summer: Lake Lewisville and Lake Ray Roberts. White crappie and white bass provide the most angling activity on Lake Lewisville. Other species include Largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass, and blue and channel catfish. Keep in mind this reservoir has special regulations for some fish. See bag and size limits for this lake.
Black bass, catfish, crappie, and sand (white) bass are popular on Lake Ray Roberts. All game fish at Lake Ray Roberts are currently managed under statewide regulations.
Fishing with Kids
Recreational fishing is an excellent hobby for kids since it teaches patience, coordination and perseverance. Fishing can help boost a child’s confidence and help them gain a sense of independence as they learn to hone their motor skills.
Fishing can also help your children develop an appreciation for nature and spending time in the great outdoors!
We hope our guide on how to start fishing as a hobby sparks a new interest for you and your family! Cambridge Crossing, a premier DFW master-planned community, was designed to connect families to nature through miles of scenic trails, seven community lakes, parks and open green spaces.
